What MMORPG are/were you addicted to?

Hey guys,

now that we have a game discussion forum as suggested by our bluey friend bluenocturne, I thought it would be appropiate to ask if any of you are addicted (wont use the term playing, we all know mmorpg can only get you addicted) to mmorpg games.

I personally stopped playing mmorpg as soon as AU came into my life. No time for much these days. I did play alot of MMORPG before though.

Ultima Online - Played this one on a free shard which was 5 years ago. My first mmorpg and the one I played the longest. I only played as one character, which was a thief. Damn hard but alot of fun once you get your char nicely where you wanted it. The shard is still very active so if you are interested, visit www.neverlands.org. Good times, good times.

Legend of Mir
- I played the first one when it was in open beta. Thoroughly enjoyed it and spend countless nights and days playing it. Mining for that damn silver and getting killed by them zombies was a damn bitch though.

Knight Online - Korean one I think. This is one of the recent ones I played. As usual spend alot of damn time playing it during open beta, the lag did hit me way too many times and also the reason I almost failed college in my first year.

I think there are a few more but not worth talking about since I only played them briefly. I am not as hardcore as some, never played world of warcraft or any other major mmorpg.

Your turns

Earth and Beyond was my only venture into that line of addiction. I will say it was alot of fun, but I learned my lesson.
1 was enough

Actually, after that my thirst for gaming kinda dried up. I rarely play games anymore.

I feel the same. Games do not attract me so much anymore like they used to, probably because I am too old? I did play CS for a long time but that got old so I don't actually bother playing anything when I get some free time. GTA though, I do give that a go from time to time, never gets boring.

I played Everquest for about a year and a bit, forget what the news says about gta and such evercrack has taken more lives and souls than any other lol.

Played legend of mir briefly at late beta/release and it was quite fun but got boring very quickly.

I dont play games as much as did before i played mmorpg's but i still play the odd game to completion like Half-life2 and such.

I'm currently playing Guild Wars, but finding MMOs are getting a bit too boring nowadays. I basically liked any RPGs, or any other type of games, that offers a good story, so the whole thing unfolds like an interactive novel. But with MMORPGs, it's getting more and more like endless runs and missions, or with RTS, just way too time consuming.

Ah.. MMORPGs. They sure are addictive. I've played quite a few, but the addiction with each game never seemed to last more than a few months. Lets see if I can remember some of them..

Ragnarok Online - This is the one that got me started. I was an Acolyte since I've always like support-type characters in RPGs. I spent so many nights playing this one. I remember sometimes people would use a dead branch that would summon a monster in town and it would just slaughter a bunch of players.. lol if some were lucky, they'd hide in a shop until the person and their monster left. I also really remember the Christmas quest where people would try to find a rare Poring monster with a Santa hat so they could get their own hat. Ragnarok Online 2 looks pretty interesting, but I'll miss those 2d character sprites.

Anarchy Online - This was definitely one of my favorites in terms of the theme. I really like futuristic themes, so being able to explore large cities and there being robots and cool armor kept me interested lol. I ended up being the Adventurer class, since I love exploring in these types of games. Also had some pretty cool music that I remember.

Neocron - Another futuristic-theme with electonic ambient music I liked, but this one was a first person shooter/rpg developed in Germany, I believe. I thought that the concept was pretty unique at the time, but it wasn't enough to keep me interested to play after the beta. The first 5 or so hours of the game had me fighting rats in a sewer lol, but I do remember watching some cool fights between players in the city's re-light district.

Final Fantasy XI - I was excited about this one ever since it was first announced. I applied for the PS2 beta and luckily got chosen. I was another support-type character, but this time was a Red Mage. Since it was a beta, the community was small, but very friendly and you could almost remember everyone that you came across in the town or out in a battle area. Since I had beta tested, Square sent all of the beta testers the full version of the game with the PS2 HDD when it came out, so that got me playing again. Since then, I'vr bought it for PC... and almost bought it for Xbox 360.

City of Heroes - Another original concept for an online RPG where you get to create your own super hero. At the time this game had one of the most varied character creation systems. It was really hard to see people's heroes that looked similar to one you've already seen. People were even able to create look-alikes of familiar anime and other characters. This one also had a friendly community on the server I played on. Sometime's I'd walk into city hall, and there would be a bunch of people just having there characters dancing like it was some sort of party lol. But then again, the server had it's own shoutcast radio station, so they were all probably listening to it. Unfortunately the lack in veriety of missions caused me to lose interest after a month. I've been tempted to go back to the game, though.

World of Warcraft - This is the last mmorpg that I was addicted to for a few months. A lot of the quests are pretty fun and easy to get into with groups of people. Some of the things I didn't really like about this one was that a lot of the players online were pretty immature. It's almost like the Counter-Strike of mmorpgs with all of the insults you hear lol. I also really disliked the character designs. .. so I doubt I'll get into it again any time soon. I may try out World of Starcraft if there ever is such a game.

I am playing Ragnarok Online on a private (and free) server. I often get bored of it too, I definitely DO NOT like repetative grinding.

Wow, that is a long time. To be honest, hearing how so many people got addicted to the game, I actually avoided it because I thought that I might also become addicted.

My boyfriend and I have played Dark Age of Camelot since beta, taking a break to try World of Warcraft, but then returning to try out the new classic server. I got into the FFXI pc beta but didn't really enjoy the game so kinda gave up on that a month or so after retail. City of Heroes and City of Villians were fun for a couple of months but became too repetitive.
We also play other games like Planetside and one thats in beta at the moment, Rakion, when we feel like diving in for some quick action.
My boyfriend played Ultima Online before we met, but its not one i've tried.

Lol, that sentence made me giggle. A break from one MMORPG to go to another addictive one, what a break :D

I never played any everquest or world of warcraft, not sure I want to. I think having to purchase it as a physical always held me back. I always prefered those that you can download and play straight away.

I played Ragnarok Online for years. (shame on me)
but before that my first ever online game was PSO on dreamcast: that was something special. I'll be picking up PSU this month, though I won't have much time playing this...

The first one for me would be everquest. It was during the time we took a break with our table top role playing sessions and some people told me and another friend that it was practically same thing except you cant see the players and have to write to communicate with them. After playing it for 5 years one morning I woke up and suddenly it dawned on me that I was addicted and also it was not like table top role playing games not one tiny bit.
After that I played a lot more online games but in the end I never wasted as much time I had wasted in EQ. The community was a big selling point in EQ and none of the other games I tried even came close to that sense of community for me which was actually very good for me because it possibly prevented another 5 years going down the drain. The ones I remember were dark age of camelot, world of warcraft, anarchy online, final fantasy, star wars, city of heroes and also various betas. My last one was dungeons and dragons online which I closed after I accepted my current job.

But I still remember some of the good times I spent in those games (focus on some) and dont mind swapping stories with my other former-mmorpg buddies when we are feeling nostalgic.

I dont miss playing online games tho. I think right now the only thing that I miss is playing table top role playing games with friends.

Yeah table top role playing games will never compare to a computer game. I think its because its more social. Its like playing monopoly on the computer online or at your house among your friends, few drinks and snacks and make a good time of it.

I am so glad I never played more than two years on a game, I probably would have wasted as much time as you Kirtil if I attempted ever quest.

The only MMO's I've been addicted to in my time were Phantasy Star Online and Final Fantasy XI. I started WoW over the summer, but I've been on a break from it for about 3-4 weeks now, as I've been quite busy. Not sure if I'll get back into it or not, as Phantasy Star Universe comes out at the end of the month, and I'm way amped about it.

I played world of warcraft, guild wars, and lineage 2 for a while, then tried 9 dragons that was cool for a while to kind of like guild wars set in ancient china with different kung fu clans to join, once you master the clans kung fu it becomes a bit boring though.
